Oktoberfest ist wunderbar!

Last Friday marked the opening of the 7th annual Beau’s Beer Oktoberfest. This is the signature fundraising event of the brewery and it takes place at the Fairgrounds in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. The popular two-day Bavarian culture festival is a celebration of craft beer, local food and musicians.

We first attended Beau’s Oktoberfest in 2013 and completely fell in love with the event. This was our 3rd time attending the festivities and it is by far our favorite event of the year. We look forward to it year after year and it never disappoints. We always have the best time! I love walking into the event year after year and looking at the artwork. Every year they feature a new mural, and it’s always exciting to see the unveiling.

It wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without the delicious Bavarian-inspired food! There were some really great food vendors on-site, many of whom were offering their own take on traditional Bavarian fare using Beau’s beer as a key ingredient. It didn’t take us long to zero in on Brit & Chips, Montreal’s authentic Fish n’ Chips restaurant. Tender, flaky white fish wrapped in a light crispy and flavorful beer batter, served with crunchy fries, tartar sauce, and lemon. SO good!

After all that deliciousness it was time for some beers! We headed to the KÖLN beer tent to pick up the Weiss O’Lantern, a pumpkin-wheat beer, spiced with ginger, cinnamon and orange peel. It also has hints of banana and clove, topped with a satisfying graham-cracker finish. Did you know that Beau’s puts more than 350 pounds of organic pumpkin into each batch of Weiss O’Lantern?

With our beers in hand, we walked over to the main stage to watch three time Grammy award winner and Canada’s Polka King Walter Ostanek perform traditional Oktoberbest entertainment. It’s impossible not to bust out your dance moves with such fun and lively music. He really is amazing!

After watching the band, we headed towards the activities area to watch the malt sack race. Competitors hop to the finish line in one of Beau’s brewer’s malt bags. Beau’s always has fun activities planned and they are so fun to watch! Every year you’ll find the malt sack race, keg tossing, stein holding struggle, partner carrying race, and the traditional sausage-eating contest.

We were getting a little hungry, so after taking a stroll through the many food vendors we decided to share a poutine from Bite Burger.

By now you know that I’m a total foodie and a craft beer-nerd, so one of the highlights of Oktoberfest was attending the School of Bock – Pairing Seasonal Beer & Food class with Chef Bruce Wood. Beau’s Chef thought us how to cook delicious seasonal, local food inspired by local seasonal beer. The class included four beer and food samples. The food was amazing, and I really enjoyed meeting him and chatting with him about food and his passion for it. I’ve never had a food and beer pairing that was as perfect as the one served during this class. All the flavors worked so well together and balanced each other out. It was absolute perfection!

Towards the end of the night, it was getting pretty cold so we opted for a little warm bevvie to keep us going. I forgot to take a photo, but we stopped to get a Beau’s Beer Hot Chocolate topped with the Tom Green Milk Stout from Pascale’s Ice Cream. It was sweet, incredibly creamy, and hands down the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had in my entire life! We are still talking about it a few days after the event! In my books, this is the absolute best Oktoberfest in Canada. It really ist wunderbar! If you didn’t make it to Vankleek Hill for Oktoberfest this year, not to worry as there is always next year. Don’t miss the opportunity to say hi to Steve Beauchesne, to dance to the Walter Ostanek band, and to sample some of the best beers and food around. Big love and congratulations once again to Beau’s Brewery for another outstanding Oktoberfest!

See you next year – Prost!

xo,

Susie
