Staying Fresh the Natural Way

Okay guys! I’m pretty excited about this post. My quest for the perfect natural deodorant is officially over because I’ve finally found the best one on the market. Did I really just say that I’m excited about a deodorant? Clearly I need help. In my previous post I talked about how I want to make 2017 my healthiest year yet, and after reading one too many articles on how bad traditional deodorants are for you, I just couldn’t do it anymore and decided then and there to make the switch and go the natural route.

There are so many natural brands of deodorant out there and finding the right one for you can definitely be a challenge. Trust me, I’ve done the leg work! But when you come across a great quality deodorant that’s free of potentially harmful ingredients, loaded with items that are good for you, makes you smell good AND contains an active component that can actually nix odor-causing bacteria it feels like winning the lottery!

I stumbled upon the Agent Nateur holi(Rose) No. 4 Deodorant while online shopping at The Detox Market (one of my favorite green beauty stores). I was browsing through the What’s New section and began reading some of the reviews. The feedback on the product was really positive and it convinced me to give it a try. Now the price tag is a little steep ($31 for 1.7 fl. oz/ 50 ml), but since I was stocking up on a few skincare essentials, I added it to my cart and figured it was worth a shot. At first I was a little skeptical that it would be as effective as conventional deodorants, but I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised.

I like to stay active and I’m always on the go, so I need something that can keep me feeling and smelling fresh throughout the day, isn’t overly fragrant, and doesn’t clump or leave streak marks on my clothes. This holi(stick) checks all of those boxes; it’s the first natural deodorant that has worked amazingly at keeping my underarms feeling fresh and smelling like roses (no joke!). I haven’t tried it during the hot summer months yet, so we shall see how that goes, but for now it’s been incredibly life changing!*

{Why Traditional Deodorants Are Bad For You}

We’ve known for quite some time now that aluminum-based antiperspirants and deodorants are not good for our health. The aluminum chloride used in conventional antiperspirants has been linked to hormonal imbalances and in some cases, breast cancer. Did you know that putting chemicals on our skin may actually be more harmful to our health than eating them? When applied to the skin, they are absorbed through the bloodstream and lymphatic system without any filtering, whereas when we eat them, the enzymes in the saliva and stomach help break down what’s ingested and flush out the toxins.

Most deodorants contain a plethora of unpronounceable ingredients, many of which pose health concerns. They also include aluminum compounds (like aluminum chlorohydrate), which act as plugs for the sweat ducts and temporarily stop the flow of sweat. Much like Parabens (preservatives commonly found in most beauty products), these compounds can be absorbed by the skin and mimic estrogen, which promotes the growth of breast cancer cells.

Holi(Rose) is the love child of a very special collaboration between Shiva Rose (a green beauty guru I follow) and Agent Nateur. Together they perfected the deodorant for six months to release this beautiful scent and luxe packaging. Labeled holi(stick) for many reasons, this luxurious deodorant is comprised of organic coconut oil, sodium bicarbonate, beeswax, sunflower butter, avocado butter, castor oil, and rose and sandalwood essential oils. The smell is intoxicating and healing, while the sandalwood (a pheromone) acts as a natural deodorant. If you’re wondering why the No. 4, it derives its meaning from creation, and represents patience, trust, honesty and integrity. Not only is this beautiful product formulated with the finest organic ingredients, it’s also made with love. Did you know that the ingredients are so pure that you can actually eat the deodorant? That’s pretty cool if you ask me!

{Why holi(Rose) is so good}

  • Long lasting;
  • Protects, conditions, and eliminates sweat and odor;
  • Keeps me smelling fresh even through the sweatiest workouts (pilates, spinning, boxing, hot yoga);
  • Created with non-gmo, pesticide-free, food-grade ingredients that you can eat;
  • Free of all toxic chemicals (GMO’s, parabens, sulfates, aluminum and petroleum);

The deodorant comes in stick form (much like traditional deodorants), simply twist up and apply as you would conventional ones. One of the things that I most enjoy about this holi(stick) is the ease of application. Because of all the natural oils, it’s very moisturizing, applies really nicely, and glides on smoothly without pulling the skin. A little bit does go a long way with this product, all you need is 1 or 2 swipes under each arm and you’re good to go. However, I found that if I applied the product too liberally the armpit area left little bit of white residue on the inside of my shirts. So keep in mind that less is definitely more.

The formula is also mild enough to apply right after shaving. I didn’t experience any burning or irritation but if you have a history of sensitive skin or allergic reactions, make sure to test the product on a small area inside your wrist for 2-3 days prior to using. If you are sensitive to baking soda, I recommend you try an apple cider vinegar wash before using the deodorant, simply apply apple cider vinegar and warm water to a towel and wash your underarms before applying.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, the price point is definitely higher than the traditional deodorants you will find at the drugstore, but I have been using mine for over a month now and have barely made a dent in it. It definitely looks like it will last a great deal longer. If you’re in the market for an all-natural, non-toxic deodorant, I’d definitely give this one a whirl. You won’t regret it!

Have you tried any natural deodorants? Do you have any favorite brands? Let me know in the comments below!

xo,

Susie

*Quick update: I’ve been using the deodorant through all of summer ’17 and still really love it. It does keep me feeling fresh and smelling lovely, but I do have to reapply on days where it’s really hot and humid. But then again, I do tend to sweat quite a bit, so it may depend on whether or not you sweat a lot.
