Cornwall Summer Beer Fest

Last weekend, we headed downtown to Jet Set Pub (NAV Centre) for the inaugural of the Cornwall Summer Beer Fest. It was a beautiful sunny day, which was perfect for being outdoors, sipping sweet suds and feasting on gourmet fare.

The Summer Beer Fest is an interactive beer and wine tasting festival presented by the Seaway Food Festival and Jet Set Pub. As this was the inaugural of the event, we didn’t really know what to expect, but I must say that we were pleasantly surprised! The doors opened at 11 a.m. on Saturday, but by mid-afternoon, the Nav Centre was filled with festival-goers gathering around the vendors and sitting at picnic tables and lounge chairs under canopies. It was a huge success, and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

first beers

Our first stop was at the Broadhead booth. Alex (who is already a big fan of their brews) has told me so many great things about them, so I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to try them out! He decided on the Grindstone Amber  a tenacious and tasty, rich-coloured amber ale, and I went for the Wildcard Ale  a refreshing, lightly bittered beer with a delicious hint of citrus. They were both very good!

Many of the breweries brought along a collection of locally-brewed IPAs, but some also brought darker brews including a chocolate stout and a very popular Belgian waffle maple dark beer (I tried it it was amazing!). It was nice to have the opportunity to discover new products, chat directly with the producers, and learn a little more about the whole brewing process.

It goes without saying that drinking beer on an empty stomach while under the sun is never a good idea, which is why we were excited about sampling some delicious local food to accompany the great beer selection. Some of the on-site food vendors were Truffles Burger Bar, Jet Set Pub, and Love Love Food.

candied bacon

OK, I MUST mention Jet Set Pub’s candied bacon served with a spicy mayo!! They say the simple things in life are the best, and after tasting this sweet-and-savory-finger-licking-good treat, I really can’t argue with that! Warning: If you already have an addiction to bacon, I cannot be held responsible if this picture feeds your addiction and leaves you craving it morning and night! Candied Bacon. You’re welcome.

last call

Throughout the day and into the evening, there were some really great live musical performances from local artists such as Jesse Ferguson, Bruce Ciccarelli, and Switchgear (who headlined the event with an acoustic set). They were all very good, and the unplugged setting complemented the event very well.

One of our top brew discoveries from the festival is the Juan Almonte Jalapeño Pale Ale from Bicycle Craft Brewery. It’s made with fresh jalapeños! I found it to be perfectly refreshing, unique in taste, and subtly spicy. Another one of our favorites is the El Hefe brew from NitaBeer. It had hints of banana and cloves with a peppery finish. It truly is as they said “the boss of summer beers!” I very much enjoyed it!

It was such a fun day! We had an amazing time at the festival, and are really looking forward to next year’s event. Congratulations to Summer Beer Fest on a successful inaugural event!

See you next year!

xo,

Susie
